DC ran mika close, what made mika a double world champion was he was more often 2 tenths quicker in qualy and didn't have aas many unforced errors
He one this
remember that race. JV was the "best of the rest" behind McLarens and Schumi. pity he failed to score that season
Irvine should've been the 1999 World Champion.
I'm a ferrari fan, and supported Eddie, but being realistic, that glory belonged to Michael. He missed months due to a broken leg, and on his first race back out-qualifies the whole grid by a second.
He could have got a seat in one of the smaller teams for sure, specifically with his experience. I think it was also his ego.
The great days of F1.
Adrian Newey’s reaction in the garage said it all. “David, what are you *doing?!*
This is the only real win of Irvine... no gift from teammate
Australia also. No team orders there
@@deem1962 but all best rivals out... hakkinen, coulthard and Schumi.
But it was a gift from Coulthard.
@@peterfighter no my friend, coulthard try to win, but this time Irvine driven well
One of the times McLarens policy of letting teammates battle nearly cost them the championship. Although I'm glad they did let them because they brought us so many legendary battles.
It also almost costing Hakkinen's 2nd World title.
Who is the gentleman in the middle?
Simon Taylor
Austria was probably Eddie's finest win. Germany and Malaysia were handed to him by team-mates. While it was a hard fight against Frentzen in Australia, he was up against DC in a much superior McLaren and beat him fair and square. (Of course - in three of these races, Mika would have won at a canter if he hadn't retired, or been punted off by his team-mate ...)
in Malaysia it was first and only time i was ashamed of Schumacher being his fan
Wouldnt say much superior McLaren thats a stretch but Austria was his best win for sure
He also lucked out in Australia. So yes this win was somewhat earned for a change.
Simon Taylor and Tony Jardine excellent as well
Eddie Irvine was 2nd in 1999. From Joe. X
D'oh
Eddie had a great season for Ferrari in his last year with the team. Could of been him not Michael breaking the 20 year drought at the time for Ferrari to win its first driver's title since 1979.
I felt really conflicted at the season finale as I was a Mika fan. But part of me wanted Eddie to win
1999 F1 season definitely one of the best of the 90s
He was great until after Germany. From Hungary onwards he fell off for some reason
Frentzen was the best in 1999 by a long way
@@theiceman7590he was shafted by Ferrariand their mafia that's why. They didn't want no body else but Michael to break the duck. Hence the long pit stop.

I miss F1 in the 90’s. ITV did a great job and Martin is simply legendary. He is just so confident and quick witted
Typical Eddie Irvine!😂
1:58 Yes, because BAR had a flexible rear wing at that time...
I'm from Poland, but for some years now I'm watching the races on Sky Sports F1. Martin Brundle is one of the few people that I like from the broadcoast. Such a shame that his iconic gridwalks are now such a shitshow. I watched many of the pre and postrace shows from the past years frm UK TV on RUclips (just out of curiosity) and the quality went down. As a contrast, I remember when I was a kid and I started watching F1 on Polish cable TV channel. The pre and postrace show went for like 5-15 minutes, they were commenting from some kind of a room in an office buliding and there was a problem to find experts or even commentators that knew something about Formula 1 :D. The situation went better during the Robert Kubica days. Now Viaplay Poland is showing F1 and AFAIK the coverage is professional, compliant with a standard of big broadcoasting channels. Best regards and keep posting videos. :D
Could watch Martin all day, couldn't watch the other 3 chinless wonders for 10 seconds.
Irvine always the troll😮
Odd who I can remember all these names, but don't like F and never watched it.
Back in the good old days of just talking sense instead of brainlessly talking everything up every 5 seconds.
Definitely my all-time favourite Damon Hill post-race interview :)
"MSCH Pos1"! Ever end forever!
He won the race. From Joe. X
So, despite the ten second penalty, Schumacher had 68 of Ferrari's 86 points. He was a monumental talent.
not as monumental as Hamilton....Schumacher didn't have any competion from team mates at all, because the narcissist insited on contractual obligations for team mates to gift him any win,he deliberately crashed into opponents to win on numerous occasions,he was banned for cheating...the Benetton had launch control when it was banned...I could go on....Hamilton however,in his rooky year, gave a double world champion a run for his money...subsequently causing the dummy sucking Spaniard to throw his toys from the pram.....Hamilton missed out the WDC by 1 point.....
That year with the F310B Michael drove the wheels off that Ferrari, probably one of his best performances in his Ferrari career, that and 1998 for me Michael was impeccabile.
Thanks for uploading. Funny thing, Brundle was thinking this was a year out and he was still actively trying to get a drive for 1998.
I think the fact that the years passed by and there must be a part of him that feels a bit depressed he's not out there racing against them. I don't think it's ever left him
True but he was soon in the Le Mans Toyota GT1 and then winning Le Mans in the Bentley a few years later
By this point people were wondering if Mika was ever going to win a race.
At that point it was accurate, given that Engine failures also robbed him of winning at both Silverstone & the Nurburgring in this particular season. It's part of the reason McLaren gifted him the victory at Jerez after the Villeneuve/M.Schumacher collision. F1 Fans always knew he had the talent to be a regular race winner & World Champion.
Yeah but Mika had a horrible accident which almost cost his life in 95. If he hadn't had that accident I think people vack in 97 would have seen a multiple race winner. Mika himself discussed that it took almost 2 years for him to recover mentally. Mika was always fast but if you watched his races in 94 - 96 and 96 especially you could see he wasn't a polished driver yet. 1997 was his make or break year for sure and the fact that McLaren helped him win at Jerez gave Mika the boost he needed mentally.
Did you get the message
He calls Irvine Swerve 😂😂 funny looking back at those nicknames
The rule changes in 1998 ruined what we had going on in 1997. '97 was a fantastic season, half the grid had a podium capable car and the Williams, Ferrari and McLarens could have won the title itself. The races also always had a close finish and not everyone down from some thing like 4th was lapped every race; races were tight and contested.
Half the grid fought for victory at some point in 1997 (Hill, Fisichella, Coulthard, Hakkinen, Berger, Alesi, Trulli, Panis, Irvine, Frentzen, Schumacher, Villeneuve). It was a great season and there was no need for Max Mosley to transform the cars like that. Schumacher saved 1998 from being a McLaren walkover, but it was the start of F1's move toward narrow, long and heavier machines, which lost the behavior and visual appeal of the pre-98 cars.
Yup every rule change since 98 has been a disaster. Not the same sport anymore in any way.
@@schumiisking banning Traction Control in 2008 was a good one. But that's about it!
This guy is too old, he will nvr achieve anything in F1
Alesi not the only one to be unhappy with Irvine!
Martin was super salty in 1997 for some reason. Just sounded very jaded
A bit bitter for not getting a race seat in 1997. He said at the time it was hard to watch F1 and not racing in it.
blimey how young martin looks…and sounds …how the years have passed guys..and mika and mclaren…and it a mad how it al came either and what a difference a few changes made to the cars for 98…and then it was a dream couple of years
I do miss ITV studio broadcasts. Just my opinion
Coronation Street will begin at the end of this programme 😂
these must be the worst crew overalls ever
I've always liked Brundle. Shame his gridwalks have now been reduced to him being forced to interview airhead celebrities feigning an interest in the sport.
Exactly a real shame, Martin Brundle is much more than just interviewing celebrities.
Go back and watch old gridwalks on here from years gone by. They’ve ALWAYS been a mixture of celebrities and driver interviews.
@@danthemanf1 That's true but it's the way that it feels as if he's been reduced to that and the co-commentator role by Sky that it really feels as if he's being wasted by the way Sky do things. Maybe I'm wrong but it just feels that way to me.
Martin at his finest in studio not on the grid asking any rappers to sing.
Martin Brundle never liked Jean Alesi. They had several incidents racing each other.
Jean Alesi was a very polarising driver
At the time yes, but now they are friends.
Jean Alesi was shit, I'm sure Martin wasn't the only driver who never liked him.
This is true but they seemed to make after they stopped
@timyo6288, not really true, Alesi was hot property in the early 90s, that wasn't long ago from 97. His luck wasn't really with him most of his career. When he drive for Ferrari, can't really blame a young driver being asked to drive for Williams or Ferrari at such an early stage of his F1 career. He was mighty in the wet in fact one of the best, after Ferrari which he could of stayed but didn't want to be number 2 to Michael Schumacher, drove for midfield teams. Don't forget midfield teams in the 90s and early 00s weren't the same level of performance compared to today, and also the top 6 gets points so it was way harder to make an impression. His numer of wins doesn't do him justice, he may not be the same level of Senna or Schumacher but he was definitely a multiple race winner in the making, just unfortunate.
Brilliant upload! Timely too, as Austria 2024 is this weekend! The track configuration seems pretty much unchanged.
I remember Trulli as a rookie in the Prost leading this race for over half distance after Hakkinen's engine died on the opening lap. Was a very mixed grid with the Bridgestone vs Goodyear battle that year, like at Interlagos & Hungaroring. Good times
